Better with age – The Rising Importance of Older Workers

Overview

Older workers are becoming an increasingly large share of the global workforce, especially in G7 countries, where those aged 55+ will soon account for more than a quarter of workers. Bain estimates that by 2030, about 150 million jobs will shift to people 55 and older, yet most companies still lack deliberate strategies to attract, develop, and retain them. Research in the article shows that older workers are often motivated by mastery, autonomy, and contribution—more as “Artisans” and “Givers” than purely pay-driven employees—and that age-diverse organizations see lower turnover and higher productivity.
